What is Self Study?
Self study is a learning method where you as a student study outside the classroom and without direct supervision. You take control of what (and how) you are learning.
You can use self study and traditional classroom learning together to get the most out of your learning experience. Together, these methods help you learn and retain information better, helping boost comprehension, grades, and motivation.
The Benefits of Self Study for You
1. You learn more effectively. By exploring a topic on your own you will actively engage with the information. You are able to think about topics more deeply and make connections between what you are learning. When you are engaged (and excited) about what you are learning, you are able to remember it better.
2. You discover more about the topics you are studying. Self-study is all about searching out new information on a topic you are interested in. Seeking out this information by yourself gives you a chance to learn more about that topic (rather than just what you are taught in class).
3. You can learn at your own pace. Self-study allows you to take learning at your own pace, focusing on areas you are most interested in (or want to understand a bit better).
4. You learn how to manage your time and priorities.
Self-studying requires you to thoughtfully plan ahead when it comes to your learning and in order to make it work, you need to know how to manage your time and prioritise.
Self-studying provides the opportunity for you to be self-motivated and persistent, helping you own your autonomy when it comes to your studies. This may be difficult for some of you at first, but with a little practice youwill soon master the technique.
